Curricula for TAC's TOT Program in Translation and Interpretation at the Undergraduate Level

I. Translation Courses

Module 1: Training in translation skills (36 class hours)

Basic principles, methods and practice of Chinese-English and English-Chinese translation; basic principles, methods and practice of literary and non-literary translation.

Module 2: Training in translation didactics (30 class hours)
Basic theories and principles of translation teaching; design of the undergraduate translation syllabus; choice of translation coursebooks and teaching materials; terminology management; use of translation technology; teaching processes of the various translation courses; case study of translation teaching; translation teaching demonstration; translation teaching appraisal.

Module 3: Training in translation theory and research methodology (24 class hours)

Introduction to translation theories and latest developments; translation research methodology; writing of dissertations on translation studies.

 

II. Interpretation Courses

Module 1: Training in interpretation skills (42 class hours)

Basic principles and methods of Chinese-English and English-Chinese interpretation; training in consecutive interpretation practice; training in sight interpretation practice; introduction to simultaneous interpretation practice.

Module 2: Training in interpretation didactics (30 class hours)

Basic theories and principles of interpretation teaching; design of the undergraduate interpretation syllabus; choice of interpretation coursebooks and teaching materials; terminology management; use of interpretation technology; teaching processes of the various interpretation courses; case study of interpretation teaching; interpretation teaching demonstration; interpretation teaching appraisal.

Module 3: Training in interpretation theory and research methodology (18 class hours)

Introduction to interpretation theories and latest developments; interpretation theoretical research methodology; writing of dissertations on interpretation research.

 

III. Methods of Training

Seminar: Teachers give systematic lectures on special topics, assisted by onsite skills training, demonstration and interactive discussions.

Workshop: Teachers conduct face-to-face exchanges with trainees, and the trainees hold discussions about special topics at different stages.

 

IV. The Certificate:

Those trainees who have completed all coursework will obtain the Certificate in the Teaching of Translation and Interpretation at the Undergraduate Level issued by the TAC. Information about trainees will be included in TAC’s talent bank on a voluntary basis.
