Two French-Chinese translators honored with inaugural Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award

The Embassy of the Republic of France in Beijing, initiator of the Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award, announced the winners of the inaugural award on Dec. 6 2009 in Beijing.

Zhang Zujian, the translator of "The Way of The Masks" (La Voie des Masques) by French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Ma Zhenchi, the translator of "Montaigne: Essays" (Les Essais) by philosopher Montaingne, won the honor and will share the 8,000-euro prize with their publishers – Renmin University Press and Shanghai Bookstore Publishing House respectively.

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio, the French writer who won the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature, and Herve Ladsous, French Ambassador to China, together presented the award.

"I am overwhelmed by the unexpected favor and I feel so flattered. I regard the award not as a compliment to what I have done, but to what I should do in the future, just as the Nobel Peace Prize was honored by U.S. President Obama," Zhang said when receiving the much-coveted prize.

Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award is named after Chinese translator and art critic Fu Lei (1908-1966), who is best known for his translations of Voltaire, Balzac and Romain Rolland. This is an annual award to honor the year's most outstanding translation works from French to Chinese, and aims to promote the translation and publication of French books in China.
