The First Asian Translators Forum

Theme: Friendship, Communication and Cooperation

A number of some 100 translators and interpreters from 16 countries and regions participated in the first Asian Translators Forum, including those from China'sMainland, Hong Kong and Macau, and countries such as India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Burma, Pakistan, Singapore and Vietnam.

Mr. Huang Hua, Honorary President of TAC and a senior Chinese diplomat, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a congratulatory speech. The opening ceremony was hosted by Mr. Yan Mingfu, Executive Vice President of TAC and Vice Minister of Civil Affairs of China. Mr. Ye Shuifu, President of TAC, delivered the opening speech.

Other guests at the opening ceremony included: Mr. Yang Zhengquan, Vice Minister of the State Council Information Office and President of China International Publishing Group, Mr. Song Shusheng, Executive Vice President of TAC and President of the Central Compilation and Translation Bureau, Mr. Liu Youde, Executive Vice President of TAC and Vice Minister of Culture, Mr. Liu Xiliang, Executive Vice President of TAC and Vice Minister of Broadcasting, Film and Television, and Mr. Li Yueran, Executive Vice President of TAC and a senior translator. 

Linda Sivesin, Vice President of the International Federation of Translators (FIT), Prof. Gonie Bang, Council Member of FIT and Honorary President of the Korean Society of Translators (KST), attended and addressed the forum, an event extensively covered by Chinese media.

One of the main agenda was discussions on establishing the Asian Regional Center of FIT, similar to FIT European and North American centers. In turn, a preparatory committee for the Asian regional center was set up, consisting of representatives from TAC, Science and Technology Translators Association of Chinese Academy of Sciences (STACAS), Japanese Association of Translators, Japanese Society of Translators, KST, the Association of Indonesian Translators, and Hong Kong Translation Society. Mr. Huang Youyi, Secretary General of TAC, was elected Chair of the preparatory committee. The committee run from the end of the Forum until the Asian regional center was to be officially established. The office of the preparatory committee sat with the Secretariat of TAC.  

The First Asian Translators Forum was the first large-scale gathering of translators across Asia. It greatly promoted the communication and cooperation of Asian translators, as well as the development of the translation industry. Linda Sivesin was deeply impressed by the hospitality and capability of TAC in organizing this event, and the quality of papers presented and read on the Forum. She suggested that TAC would consider hosting a FIT World Congress in China sometime in the future.

The Forum decided that the Asian Translators Forum was to be held every three years, as hosted by FIT and organized in turn by translators associations of Asian countries.
