Eighth Asia-Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum Press Conference Held in Xi'an

The Eighth Asia-Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum (APTIF8) Press Conference was held at Xian International Studies University, on September 21, 2015. Wang Gangyi, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of TAC and Council Member of FIT, Wang Junzhe, President of Xian International Studies University (XISU), and officials of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Shaanxi Provincial Peoples Government attended the conference. A number of national and local media reporters attended the event.

During the conference, Wang Gangyi, on behalf of FIT and TAC, and President Wang Junzhe, on behalf of XISU, signed the Memorandum of Cooperation on Co-hosting the Eighth Asia-Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum.

Wang Gangyi started his speech with background information on the APTIF and in particular, on the coming forum. He pointed out that the theme has been established as Behind the Scenes: Translation and Interpreting in Tomorrows Asia-Pacific Region, which explores the present opportunities and challenges faced by translation, interpreting and other sections of the language service industry as well as its future development under theBelt and RoadInitiative targeted at regional cooperation and development and the new technological environment represented by cloud computing and big data. He suggested that the city of Xian, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road and the venue for this Forum, serves as the perfect place for scholars in the international T&I fields to understand the history of China and the development of the Chinese T&I industry.

President Wang Junzhe extended his gratitude to FIT and TAC for entrusting XISU with the important task of organizing the forum and said that XISU would do everything to ensure the success of the Forum.

Both Wang Gangyi and Wang Junzhe answered questions from journalists concerning the Forum.

The Forum will soon launch its website (www. aptif8.org), available in both English and Chinese, to provide relevant information for its attendees. Wang Feng, vice president of XISU, demonstrated the main features of the website.

APTIF was originally named the Asian Translators Forum. The first forum was organized by TAC under the auspices of FIT in 1995 in Beijing, China. Since then, the conference has been held every three years. From the second forum to the seventh forum, it was held respectively in Seoul, South Korea; Hong Kong, China; Beijing, China; Bogor, Indonesia; Macao, China and Penang, Malaysia. During the seventh forum in 2013, TAC and XISU together won the right to host the eighth forum.

The FIT Council Meeting in 2015 accepted the proposal initiated by TAC and decided to change the name of the forum to the Asia-Pacific Translation and Interpreting Forum (APTIF). As a result, the forum involves a wider region and enjoys improved status. The APTIF8 will take place on June 17-18, 2016, in Xian, China.
